CERTIFIED REGENIFIED
In 2025 Cafeology was proud to become the first roaster in the UK to receive Regenified Certification, recognising both the regenerative coffee we source and the robust processes we have in place to protect its integrity throughout our supply chain.
WHAT IS REGENIFIED COFFEE?
Regenified is a regenerative agriculture certification and verification programme designed to support farming systems that restore and improve the land over time. It focuses on areas such as soil health, biodiversity, water management, ecosystem resilience and the long-term sustainability of farming communities.
Rather than looking only at a finished product, Regenified considers how food and agricultural products are grown, managed and moved through the supply chain. Its approach is built around continuous improvement, helping farmers adopt practices that can strengthen the health of their land while creating more resilient and sustainable farming systems for the future.
Our certification ensures that once Regenified coffee reaches our roastery, it continues to be handled with the same level of care and integrity. This includes strict chain of custody controls, clear segregation from non-certified coffees and dedicated roasting processes, helping maintain full traceability from green bean through to the finished product.
Our Regenified coffee is sourced from our long-standing producer partner Roberto Mata in Costa Rica, whose farm is certified to Regenified Level 5 standards. This relationship reflects our wider commitment to supporting producers and helping create a more resilient and sustainable future for coffee.
“Cafeology was the first coffee roaster in the UK to receive Regenified Certification. We were impressed by your dedication in supporting small scale growers in Costa Rica and your focus on effective and robust chain of custody. Furthermore, your customers have benefitted from your work helping them understand the difference they make by choosing regeneratively grown coffee.”

'A Message From His Heart'
A good decision go for generative agriculture.
When I decided five years ago make the transition from conventional farming to generative, all I wanted was stop using chemicals to much and specially prohibited coffee supplements from other countries from western hemisphere.
Now I can see the way coffee trees look nice, good average crops and specially in this Super Niño climate year with about 70% less rain as usual compared with most of the conventional farms around. Wild life is back like in the 60s when I was a child, birds, wild pigs and many other.
Being regenerative now is not an option is the only way coffee activity can be rentable and we can eat some other fruits like avocadoes, bananas and some other used as shade to protect the plantations and provide organic materials to the ground.
I have reduced the use of chemicals more than 85% switching to bioproducts like fungus and bacterias protecting the environment, water, workers, our families and you as coffee drinkers.
Regards from Costa Rica, Pura Vida Land.

For us, Regenified Certification is about more than meeting a standard. It helps protect the integrity of regeneratively grown coffee while giving our customers greater transparency and a clearer understanding of the positive difference their coffee choices can make.

OUR COSTA RICA CASE STUDY

Our relationship with Roberto Mata and his family in Costa Rica dates back to 2008, when Cafeology co-founder Bryan Unkles first met Roberto at origin. Roberto is a fourth-generation coffee farmer in the Dota Valley of Tarrazú, with the fifth and sixth generations of the Mata-Montero family now also involved in the farm.
Coffee is grown across five distinct areas covering around 50 hectares, with varieties including Caturra, Catuai, Typica and Geisha.
In 2023, our Sustainability Manager travelled to Costa Rica to live and work alongside Roberto and his family, documenting first-hand the extraordinary journey coffee takes before reaching our roastery. The case study explores everything from growing and hand-picking the cherries through to processing, drying and export, while also looking at Roberto's approach to sustainability and the challenges coffee producers face from a changing climate.Roberto's approach combines generations of coffee-growing knowledge with continual innovation. His farms use shade-grown coffee systems, solar energy and practices designed to support soil health and the surrounding environment, while his commitment extends to the people who work on and live around the farm.
